Benches made of durable concrete for renovated square at Zonnepoort, Ghent (BE)

Ghent as a pioneer
The renovated square at the De Zonnepoort primary school has recently acquired circular street furniture: two benches and four ornaments made of low-CO₂ concrete. The cement was largely replaced by by-products, such as slag and ashes from the steel industry, and the aggregates in the concrete were replaced by mineral by-products. This reduces the CO₂ footprint by 65%. Soon there will also be a fire escape staircase made of sustainable concrete at the back of the school.

European project
The sustainable concrete composition of the street furniture was developed in ResourceFull's labs and produced by our company Urbastyle. This project is the first of three demo projects of the URBCON project. This European project runs from 2018 to 2023 and is run by the City of Ghent and the University of Ghent. The aim is to reduce the CO₂ footprint and the use of primary materials in the production of concrete and to introduce the sustainable concrete in the cities afterwards.
