Architectural concrete platform edges, Central Station, Antwerp, Belgium

Location: Antwerpen (BE)

A new tunnel was built underneath the Antwerp Central station. Architectural concrete platform edges with ground and acid-etched finish were installed.

Antwerp Central Station, one of the most beautiful stations in the world, was inaugurated in 1905. Recently the station was completely renovated and a tunnel was built underneath it with new tracks, platforms and platform edges to accommodate the high-speed rail line. The platforms were bordered with L-shaped platform edges. The architect opted for an anthracite colour, which contrasts with the adjacent light grey tiles. The surface of the platform edges in architectural concrete has been ground, where for the zone with tactile blisters an acidic finish has been applied. Tactile blisters were integrated during the production process and form one whole with the platform edges.
