Following the coastal defense measures to protect the city of Ostend against a 1000-year storm, the Zeeheldenplein was designed. The objectives such as coastal defence and an acceptable urban planning context are perfectly combined here. The measures in function of the coastal defence are part of the square. The large flood protection walls serve as the backrest of the benches and the quieting wave basin are sitting steps and stair elements from which you can look out onto the promenade. The small flood protections walls are used as benches. In the centre is a triangular lower square with large size slabs, several of which are equipped as fountains.
